Welcome to the Gratzek family home. Picture a splendid three-storey antique white brick home, set on a hilly terrain, surrounded by a forested area and backing onto a lake. This is the residence of Elizabeth and Tom Gratzek, their two sons and playful pet dog, Biscuit.

Key features of the décor in the Gratzeks’ home include dark woods, vibrant art work and elegant Oriental rugs offset by neutral walls, earth-tone tile and sheer drapes. In its style, the house is somewhat minimalist, with simple classic lines and yet, an understated richness.

The main floor consists of formal-informal rooms and a master bedroom with large sitting area. The family room leads us to a sun room; beneath this floor is a basement, complete with a master bedroom, kitchen, fireplace and pool-table. This happens to be the recreational area for the Gratzeks’ sons, who are attending college.

The formal living room features oversized dentil crown-molding, large widows and an imposing wood-burning fireplace. The heated floor-tile adds warmth and comfort and it is the perfect backdrop to the furnishings and wall art. Oval-shaped tables lie alongside an elegant camelback sofa and classic armchairs. To this, Impressionist-style paintings and rich Oriental carpets provide a striking contrast. The highlight of this room is a stunning picture-window with a view to the lake. Along this window you will find a long-leather bench and telescope -- thoughtfully placed for the pleasure of viewing spectacular bird life in the lake….and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

In the dining room an antique English cupboard decorated with Russian royal blue china is placed in total harmony with the main theme of the house; rich woods, colorful rugs and cheerful artwork. The theme continues to the magnificent sun room. The primary occupant of this room is none other than Biscuit himself! Here, lightweight bamboo furniture is placed on yet another gorgeous Oriental rug and complemented with ferns and other greenery. The room is surrounded by high-windows and picturesque views of the forest and lake. No wonder the sunroom is Biscuit’s favorite room…

Goneis Magazine would like to thank the Gratzek Family for their warm hospitality and for sharing their beautiful home with Goneis Family.
