The Small Village is situated in a magnificent, deep green location at an altitude of 900 meters overlooking Potamias, a spectacular valley with rich vegetation in Evritania. The mystic dance of four seasons’ unique colors has created a rare sight of Alpine beauty. It is about 310 kilometers from Athens by car and approximately 4 hours by bus. You may go to Karpenisi first which takes about five hours and then a bus that takes you to a Small Village. The village is built in a mountainous and strict architectural style with traditional two storey houses from the native produced “pepekiti” stone.

Historical sources indicate that the villages of Potamias were originated prior to Turks’ arrival in Karpenisi, thus before 1600s. After 1453, citizens of the village who knew how to process the pepekiti stone were immigrated in Constantinople (Istanbul). This information was found in a Turkish fiscal list. Additional historical sources indicate that in 1823 Markos Botsaris bivouacked in the Small Village and outlined the military strategy that he followed in the last battle at Kefalovryso. Before the battle, he prayed in the Church of Transfiguration of the Savior. The priest of the village led his army through narrow evergreen trails against the enemy. Citizens of the Small Village along with many soldiers fought with an outstanding bravery. The tradition says that before Markos Botsaris fell asleep from his grave injuries he drank cold water from the clear water fountain called “vromovrysi”, which even today relives the thirst of thousands of people. There are five stone fountains under trees that are hundreds of years old and in there you can taste the cold water, the same way the hero of the Greek Revolution (1821) Markos Botsaris tasted it. The Church of the Savior Transfiguration is located a short distance after the square and it is a significant place of interest. The bell tower was built in the late 19th century. It was donated by D. C. Sideris and the clock instead of displaying numbers to show the time, letters are forming the name of the daughter of the donor from Constantinople, Helen D. Sideris.

The Museum of the village is housed in the old school and has exhibits from traditional costumes and folklore art objects to ancient findings of the area. Also, rich photographic material from newspapers and photographs by the Greek Resistance, writings from the period of occupation and other interesting artifacts are displayed. The monument of the 13 who were executed along with Markos Botsaris is located in the forest just 1.5 kilometers from the Small Village. The path is leading to the Holy Sostis. A small lake is situated at the entrance of the village and in the spring it is converted into an oasis of color and harmony. Chestnut and pine trees are on the edge of the lake’s cool waters together with poppies and the scent of wild landscape. The Small Village is an excursion that will allure all your senses, all year round. Once you are there, do not forget to taste a stewed wine cock with mountain herbs slowly cooked in a wood-fire oven...
